Lucky Grills!
Most people in Canada are unaware that prior to becoming The Commish of BC Footy, Peter "Bluey" Campion was a rough and tumble detective patrolling the streets of Melbourne.
In much the same way that CBC was inspired by former Chief Coroner and Vancouver Mayor, Larry Campbell to create the television series, Da Vinci's Inquest, Melbourne's Crawford Productions wrote a series based on the day to day life of "Bluey" Campion.
Casting renowned thespian Stuart "Lucky" Grills in the lead role was a stroke of brilliance by the people at Channel Seven. Known and admired for his method-acting, Grills leapt into the role, adding pounds and loosing height to make sure he captured the essence of Bluey. "Basically I wanted to portray a cross between John Elliott and Molly Meldrum. Someone with a gruff exterior, balanced against a soft feminine side," said Gills, reflecting on the series.
The role would win Grills a Gold Logie and see him be crowned King of Moomba in what was a landmark year for the kid from Geelong.
Meanwhile, "Bluey" was forced to hang up his gun and holster, having become too recognisable to be an undercover cop. What was a loss for the ladies of the St. Kilda night would become a coup for BC Footy as it would finally secure the tough, but always fair Commissioner it had been searching for.
